I have read with interest An ABC of English Literature by Dr Mofizar Rahman. Intended for students of English literature in this country, the book, divided into four sections dealing with literary terms, genres, periods of English literature and Greek and Roman mythology, is an excellent introduction to the study of English literature. Although a number of standard works on the aspects covered in the book exist, they are hardly suitable for students in this part of the world because the treatment of the subjects and the language are above the level of the average non-native student of English. Dr Rahman has drawn on these works as acknowledged in the bibliography; but with the needs and abilities of our students at the back of his mind, he has presented the materials concisely and in simple lucid English. I think An ABC of English Literature is an admirable book and I do hope that it will prove useful for students embarking on literary studies.
